Molly's Mom

I wrote "Molly's Mom" at a time when the search for Molly Bish had intensified. Stories were in the paper every few days; I was haunted. For those of you who don't know, Molly Bish was a Massachusetts teenager who was abducted at a local pond in her town where she was the summer lifeguard. A few months after I wrote this song, her remains were found and her parents were finally able to have a proper memorial for their daughter. I hope this song will inspire you to learn more about the Molly Bish Foundation (www.mollybish.org) and related legislation (Megan's Law, Amber Alert).

Dozens of men in shiny orange coats
Fan out through the woods, raising my hopes
They’re like silent soldiers it all seems so strange
As if they’re in church outside in the rain
When I start to imagine what he might’ve done to you
Instead I count to ten and remember the few
Moments we had that day, talking in the car
As we drove to the pond, the sun shining hard
I brought you into this world
I love you Molly my girl
To outlive your own child well that’s some cruel curse
I’d go in your place if it could bring you back to earth
I could watch you grow old then, I’d smile from above
I’d find a way to make sure you could still feel my love
But I go into your room now, see some pictures and a comb
I stare at these things hard as if they could bring you home
Up on Whiskey Hill they found a scrap of blue
I can’t imagine that that’s all that’s left of you
I remember the day you were born
Heather could not wait to hold her baby sister in her arms
Hours of labor to bring you here
Yet in eight sorry minutes you disappeared
To outlive your own child –who would think up such a curse
I’d go in your place if it could bring you back to earth
I could watch you grow old then, I’d smile from above
I’d find a way to make sure you could still feel my love
I brought you into this world
I love you Molly my girl
